Last episode of Season 1 Lost

The last episode of Lost did not come as that much of a surprise to me. However, this only because I had heard about what happens from other people. It was a very suspenseful episode with lots of open endings to make you want to watch the next season. It also contained a juxtapostion between Clair's baby, Aaron, being returned bit Walt being taken. The tensions between Locke and Jack always going to arise sometime as they have very different beliefs, but the stuble way that the tension between the two increases leaves you wondering what will eventually happen between the two. The glimse of the heroin in Charlie's bag leaves you shaking your head and hoping that he throws it about before taking any. The episode is a contrast from the first
part of Exodus which left us with a false sense of safety, this is destroyed in this episode and we are left waiting in suspense for the next season.

More development on Jack

Confidence Man: In this episode we find out Jack's other side, when he allows Siad to torture Sawyer for Shannon's asthma inhalers. It shows how Jack can be so focused on saving one person, that he disregards, or neglects his humane duty to another. It shows that Jack has a ruthless side to him that he sometimes lets out, perhaps not for the best.

All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues: In this episode we are shown in more detail the relationship Jack had with his father, through the use of flashbacks. We see how Jack had to decide whether or not to dob his father in, or to let him get away with going into surgery intoxicated, which resulted in a woman dying. Jack only tells the authorities when he finds out that the woman they had been operating on together was pregnant and his father had not told him. This meant that Jack did not know to try and save the baby as well. It shows that Jack is prepared to tell on his family in order to do the right thing, even if it will ruin his fathers life. Jack is prepared to do this so that his father never hurts anyone else by going in to operate while intoxicated.

Lost- White Rabbit

Cultural References
-Alice in Wonderland (white rabbit who leads Alice to the hole, and how Alice goes looking for the White Rabbit in the hole, like Jack searching for his Dad who had lead him to Australia)

Themes involving searching
-Searching for Jack's father, now and in flashbacks. We learn that that was the reason for jack being on the plane, he was taking his fathers body back home.

Examples of conflict
-Choosing to save Joanna or Boone when they were both drowning.
-Jack has to choose whether to step up to the role as leader or not
-The need for water, as it is running out
-Trying to find out who stole the remaining water

First impressions of LOST

JACK- first impressions
-My first thought when I saw Jack was that he was a business man, however as the episode went on it became obvious that he was a doctor. This was because he went around helping people with medical skills a business man would not have.
- He was probably in his late 30's, or around about.
- He seemed to be a natural leader and confident about being in charge. He helped people, and when he needed to help someone else, enlisted other peoples help. He took charge of going to find the transceiver.
- He put other people first as he resuced and helped the people by the plane crash before going to sort out his own wounds.
- And seemed to be rather brave, and calm, about the whole plane crash scenario. I got this impression as he did not panic when he saw the plane crash, but got straight in and started helping.

Re evaluation of flyer

Line

Lines are used effectively in this poster, as decoration lines that lead and attract the eye to the main image (the text 'juice'). The lines vary in width, and as most of them have a diagonal direction give the feeling of movement and vitality. This complements the poster and image as it is advertising smoothies, which would give you energy.

Colour

The colour scheme in this poster is bright, bold colours. These vibrant colours are attractive to the eye, and draw attention to the main parts of the poster which are coloured most brightly (text 'juice', picture of smoothie, titles). The bold pink matches the letter 'U' in the main text 'juice' with the picture of the smoothie. The colour gives a fresh feel, that makes you thirsty for the smoothie. It is a modern colour scheme that will attract younger members.

Typography

The main image in this flyer is the text 'juice'. The font of the text is rounded, modern which matches the general mood of the poster. It is an easy to read font, and is a in 3D. This makes the text a lot more dominant and the glyphs are arranged as if they are humans standing in a line. They overlap slightly, but not enough to make it hard to read.

Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds doesn't really apply to this poster. However the smoothie picture is in the center top of the picture if you divided it into a grid.

Questions for research project

• What is a line?
How do lines help in directing the eye?

• What effects can the use of lines in design create?
Some effects that lines create:

Horizontal lines create a calm and peaceful mood.

Vertical lines give strong, uplifting and inspiring mood and hint at potential movement.

Diagonal lines give a very lively mood and give a strong feeling of movement.

Lines can be used as contours to define edges and give a definite outline.
They can also be used to separate areas of a design, creating the rule of thirds.
The other use for lines in design is to adorn or embellish, designs such as this.

Lines can:

• Create movement
• Provide texture
• Convey a mood or emotion
• Define shapes
• Provide emphasis
• Provide a framework
• Organize, connect, separate
• Organize information.
• Highlight or stress words.
• Connect pieces of information.
• Outline a photo or set it off from other elements.
• Create a grid. (A grid is the underlying structure of a page.)
• Create a chart or graph.
• Create a pattern or rhythm by drawing many lines.
• Direct the reader's eye or create a sense of motion. (Create a sense of action by using a diagonal line.)
• Suggest an emotion

Flyer evaluation

Evaluation:
I chose this flyer as it stands out to me. The colours of this poster are bright and go well together. The 5 different funky colours are modern and match with the modern 3D look of the letters.

Genres 9th February

'What are Genres and what do they mean to our daily lives?' This is the question posed to us to blog about for homework. We had been discussing genres in English on Monday, and it is now our chance to write what we think. So....
A genre is a way of tying together related texts (books, songs, movies etc.) that follow certain criteria. Genres are catergories that are not definite -a book can be more than one genre- but help to access and store what we put under those genres. This means that when you walk into a library or go to hire a movie, you can easily move to the section of book/movie you want to read/watch and pick out a suitable item - much easier than trawling through random books/movies.

Homework Feb 3rd

In English today we had a discussion on things in general that we would like to know and things that we would like to achieve and learn in English this year. Examples of these were; learning how to write exellence level essays and how to pass NCEA Level One English with at least merit. Another thing that we all established was that we did not want to repeat certain texts that we have studied before, e.g Butterflies, or focus too much on PEE paragraphs. An aim for us all this year was to make English fun and interesting by contributing ideas on what we want to learn and how we will learn it.
